OffBeat Music: X-factor 2010 Catch-Up

SO The X-Factor live shows are well and truly on their way, some would even go as far as to say they’ve hit their stride (but NOT me, not yet) as we’re 3 days away from the 3rd week of live-shows and as far as great TV goes, it’s not been disappointing. Well not to me anyway. So erm if you haven’t been watching, here’s what happened. Katie Waissel is still in the competition and here’s why…

They say you’re only as good as your last song, film, book (insert whatever that is here) and going by her last two performances, iThink it’d be safe to say Ms. Waissel is giving as good as she’s getting on the live shows. I don’t know if that changes your opinion about whether or not she should even be in the live shows BUT I will say this though, as much as I can’t stand the woman, she does deserve (I say deserve very loosely and only for the lack of a better word) to be at the live shows right now. At least she’s done better than the acts that have been eliminated so far – Diva Fever, Storm Lee & FYD. Not Nicolo Festa however but that’s just the way the dice rolls sometimes.

However outside the singing and the performances, Katie Waissel still remains one of the hated contestants of this year’s X-Factor series, possibly of the entire X-Factor history with rumours circling that she leaked a story of her having a one-night thing with Mr X-Factor 2010 himself, Matt Cardle. They both came out to deny the rumours but the speculations that she devised the rumour in a bid for added attention have left X-factor fans and contestants reeling!

Talking about eliminations, last week Belle Amie almost left the competition but they went and did this…

First and foremost, I love that song. They did OK but you can kinda see the potential there and I’m most certain that the UK does have some room for one more girl band after The Saturdays and Girls Aloud. #ps the closing scene where they all sorta hurdle up together all teary-eyed and all that? Heart-breaking stuff I tell ya. Glad they gave a good rendition though because it’d be even worse if they had to leave after that! Still not #teambelleamie but we’ll see what they come up with this weekend.

Talking about teams, we at OffBeat Music are #teamDanni #teamMatt #teamAiden #teamRebecca & #teamTreyc primarily. Unfortunately none of the boys particularly shone for me last week and apart from Aiden Grimshaw in the first week, none of the boys stood out then either. Matt Cardle continued to do what we knew he could do. Last week, he covered Bruno Mars‘ ‘Just The Way You Are’ and I don’t think he added anything to the record, he sang it well enough and he hit all the right notes so he didn’t take anything away from it but I guess it’s hard to be one up on the talented Mr. Mars… Matt still remains the favourite for that much coveted UK Christmas #1 Single slot and here’s his Bruno Mars cover…

Aiden bottled his performance last week and luckily for him, he’ll get another chance this weekend to make amends. Rebecca Ferguson & Treyc Cohen are killing it mate. Like literally killing it mate! They sang ‘Feeling Good’ & ‘Purple Rain’ respectively last weekend and they both pulled it off. I cannot wait to hear them both this weekend. Treyc especially is really shining and proving that she deserves more than anyone else to be called back for the live shows and I still feel that if reports are anything to go by, that is that her ex-managers were given £1 (thought to rise to £500) by the X-Factor’s lawyers to buy out her existing management contract then that is an ultimate par because she’s a huge asset and £1 or even £500 is just a slap across the face. Her ex-managers have been managing her for a whole year for crying out loud…

John Adeleye remains in the competition and he just might sneak in to the #top5 or #top6 undetected but you never can tell with Louie Walsh as his mentor. That would be a great thing though, because we want him to go as far as possible in this and the public seem to like him. This is how we at OffBeat Music think it’ll pan out… Matt Cardle, Rebecca Ferguson, Mary Bryne, Treyc Cohen, Aiden Grimshaw, John Adeleye BUT it’s so hard to call because at the end of the day, it is more of a popularity contest than a singing competition. The fact that you can sing will only help you up to  certain point. Having said that, let’s take a look at Mr. Adeleye’s performance from last week…

In other news, it has been reported that ITV has paid Simon Cowell‘s TV company Syco & co-producers Talkback Thames £100 million to keep both the X-Factor & ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ series on ITV for three more seasons. With Sunday’s results show pulling in 15.2 million viewers, 5 million more than BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, who can blame the bosses at ITV. It’s bloody great TV and as it goes X-Factor and BGT are the two most popular entertainment programmes on UK television period! We hear that the deal also gives ITV2 the exclusive rights to show America’s X-Factor & America’s Got Talent in the UK and even though the X-Factor live shows take about £1.5 million to produce per weekend, Syco & Talkback Thames will still be laughing to the bank. Think programme sales abroad, think music sales, just think!

You will have noticed that we have failed to mention Ms. Cher Lloyd up until this point. I bumped into some interesting footage on Youtube the other day, I’ll let you see it and we’ll have it to leave it at that…

Until Next Week…
